The Wage Expectations and Unemployment Experience of School Leavers

Abstract: Using a random sample of school leavers who had been in the labor market for some ten t o sixteen months, the wage expectations of the nonemployed in the sam ple are examined in the light of wages actually being earned by those in employment. The results suggest that for the young (age 16) and u nqualified wage expectations among the nonemployed may be somewhat hi gher than the actual earnings of similar young employed persons. Amon g the better qualified and for all older age groups, however, wage ex pectations are uniformly less than the wages being earned by equivale nt employed young persons.
