Further Thoughts on Public Goods, Private Goods and Mixed Goods

Abstract:
The multidimensional approach to mixed goods (suggested in some previous discussions), requiring recognition that the utility derived from any good may involve one or more utilization variables and a number of quality variables, is developed to provide a framework that covers the whole spectrum from private to pure public goods. In this approach, pure private goods are those for which there is no collective enjoyment in any dimension and pure public goods are those for which collective enjoyment in all dimensions is universal. Mixed goods fall between these extremes. Problems of congestion and clubs can be handled within this general framework. Copyright 1988 by Scottish Economic Society.
