Occupational Mobility and Labour Market Structure: A Multivariate Markov Model

Abstract: The rate of occupational mobility is modeled as a semi-Markov process, decomposed to reflect l abor market segmentation within firms and occupations. The work histo ries analyzed are from an Irish mobility study. Moves by type are fur ther classified by occupational and industry groups to investigate di fferences in career patterns by sector. Mobility components are model ed as a function of job duration, age, and the match between resource s and returns. Covariate effects are found to differ by move type and sector. Thus, returns to education and seniority are highest for int rafirm moves and moves by professional and managerial workers. Copyright 1988 by Scottish Economic Society.
