Abstract:
By suitably transforming the results of the Confederation of British Industry Industrial Trends Survey, and combining them with Index of Industrial Production data, this paper examines the behavior of capacity utilization and potential output in six manufacturing industries in Scotland over the period 1977-86. Most industries experienced a decline in capacity utilization between 1980 and 1982, which was followed by adjustments to levels of productive capacity. Overall, Scottish manufacturing potential output is shown to have fallen slightly over the period of study. Copyright 1989 by Scottish Economic Society.
