Management with a Frame of Mind for Systemic Thinking: A Conceptual Condition Setting Tool

Jean‐Paul Ngana

Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2015, vol. 32, issue 2, 175-182

Abstract: Social responsibility is a novelty that should replace the current socio‐economic order for humankind to survive by application of systemic thinking/behaviour. In this context, the purpose of this article is to propose a conceptual tool to setting the necessary condition to fostering the unlearning of the principles of the reductionist approach and its methodological approach, and the learning (both at individual and organizational levels) of the systemic approach, towards sustainability via social responsibility. This article argues that failing to simultaneously acknowledge and take into consideration the inherited reductionist principles and its longstanding established methodological approach, and the management models (mechanistic, biological and social), is counterproductive in the process of embracing and/or learning the systemic approach. It also argues that failing to adopt the suitable management model and its proper contextualization has slowed and/or negatively impacted the journey towards sustainability's destination, including social responsibility. A systemic view is taken in order to foster a frame of mind simultaneously acknowledging and unlearning the reductionist fundamental principles and methodologies, and adopting appropriate management model, in the process of learning systemic approach. A conceptual condition setting tool is proposed on the basis of the integration of the fundamental and complementary principles of unlearning and learning, and the principles of management models.
