The Social Geography of Rome

Abstract: The city of Rome presents urban analysts with a paradox combining, in its development, processes characteristic of both Anglo‐American and Third World forms of urbanisation. To understand this complexity it is necessary to examine the manifestation of structural forces within particular local context. The research presented in this paper combines conceptual understanding of the major processes that operate to effect Rome’s development and empirical analysis at the neighbourhood‐district level. The results of this investigation provide detailed insight into the social geography of the contemporary city.
