Abstract:
This paper examines the complex array of forces that have shaped the human geography of the Welsh language, particularly since the early 1960s. Geolinguistic shifts are related to demographic movements and processes of socio‐economic restructuring. Changes in the status of the language and in forms of institutional support (cultural empowerment) are also assessed. Finally, consideration is given to the future development of Welsh as a minority language.
