CONTAGION PHENOMENA: OCCURENCE AND TRANSMISSION MECHANISMS

Abstract: Contagion phenomena are a real challenge for economists and economic theory, and in the same time they induce important policy issues at national and international level. Despite significant progress has been made in recent years, there is still no consensus on their definition. This paper aims to contribute to the contagion literature on two levels: (1) a synthesis of theoretical and empirical contributions to contagion - definition, contagion channels, classes of contagion and transmission mechanisms, the relationship between contagion and crisis; (2) a new definition of contagion.
