Abstract: The present paper explores the amount of support received by the new member states and the effects of this support in addressing the challenges these economies face and on the regional competitiveness of these countries. The paper analyzes the relation between the absorption of structural funds and the evolution of regional competitiveness level in Romania and Bulgaria. After creating the competitiveness profiles of the selected countries, a correlation analysis between the funds received and several competitiveness indicators is performed. The research of this relation helps us to underline the critical role of cohesion policy and structural funds on the economies of the selected new member states.
