Abstract:
This paper investigates the linkage between productivity performance and exporting activity using Korean manufacturing firms for 2006-2009. This paper examines whether there exist self-selection, learning-by-exporting, or both by using the quantile regression with firm level data set. The result suggests no consistent empirical evidence of learning by exporting. However, it is found that if firms are already in the export market, their productivity differential is an increasing function of the export intensity. In addition, the results support consistent evidence of self selection and suggest that self-selection is strengthened at the upper level of productivity distribution. Therefore, from the policy point of view, this finding suggests that the government should focus on industrial policy that can enhance a firms efficiency rather than providing many incentives to encourage the export activity.
