„Das Wunder der europäischen Musik“ und der Wettbewerb

ORDO. Jahrbuch für die Ordnung von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, 2002, vol. 53, issue 1, 207-226

Abstract: Section I contains a survey of various theories and empirical investigations which might be helpful in explaining the „miracle of European music“. Section II distinguishes various transmission mechanisms by which competition among the rulers may have promoted the development of musical composition. Section HI demonstrates that the famous composers of baroque music changed their employer more frequently in the leading countries, Italy and Germany, than in England and France and that this difference is statistically significant. It is interpreted as a difference in the degree of competition on the demand side. Another factor is increasing competition among the churches after the reformation. Section IV analyzes musical competition in other centuries - including competition between the church and the state in the middle ages. It is shown that competition in Italy was even more intensive during the renaissance than in baroque times. The last section suggests that the style of European music may even be an expression of Europe’s competitive spirit.
