Abstract:
Our article addresses the question whether ‘liberty’ is appropriately conceptualised as ‘negative liberty’. Based on a comparison of the ideas of Friedrich August von Hayek and Isaiah Berlin we outline how the idea of a negative concept of liberty did emerge as the dominant paradigm in the twentieth century. Against this background we develop the thesis that it is necessary to understand the complex interdependence between positive and negative aspects of freedom in order to arrive at a holistic, active understanding of the dynamic nature of freedom and the concepts used to define it.
