Abstract:
Is the European Monetary Union a “good ” monetary constitution from an ordoliberal point of view? To answer this question, we distinguish between a traditional and a modern ordoliberal perspective. We explain the traditional perspective on monetary constitutions and compare it to arguments advanced by modern constitutional economics, in particular the work of James M. Buchanan. With this paper, we argue that ordoliberalism should be modernised in order to better participate in the international economic discourse.
