Abstract: The concept of plagiarism has been known to a broad population since the Causa zu Guttenberg at the latest. There are also more and more cases of plagiarism and self-plagiarism in the scientific community. For the latter, the question arises as to the assessment from the perspective of institutional economics in general and the theory of copyright and property rights in particular. From this perspective, this paper analyses why researchers commit self-plagiarism and which effects are associated with it. The aim is to make a contribution to objectifying the discussion.
