Abstract: In this years European elections neither the agenda of the European Union nor constitutional questions around the European project received much attention. The different party alliances warned against right wing populism as a threat to liberal democracy and presented the novelty of so called top candidates as an increase of legitimacy without debating if after the extension of the European Union anyone expected the further deepening, the “ever closer union”, that would call for additional “parlamentarization”. Therefore one should revisit the stages of European unification, look at the acclaimed franco-german axis, which in many respects was the German attempt at keeping France within western structures and ask how the distinct French and German attitudes and policy concepts could be reconciled so that Europe after Brexit still contributes to western alliances.
