Abstract: Private military companies have experienced a renaissance since the end of the Cold War. The clients expect certain advantages from their use, such as supposedly lower costs, faster operational readiness and the possibility of carrying out covert operations. However, these advantages are offset by considerable disadvantages. This article analyzes the corresponding problems caused by the use of private military service providers with the help of the New Institutional Economics and discusses possible solutions. It turns out to be unfortunate that such clients, who do not have the potential to use these tools effectively, benefit most from the use of private military contractors.
