Abstract:
Populists’ relationship to free-market competition is controversial and ambivalent. Equally ambivalent appears their relationship to cronyism and clientelism, which populists often oppose in opposition, but to which they themselves often tend when in government. This article resolves these ambivalences by identifying as a driving force of populist movements a rebellion against the entanglement of political and economic power, which, however, is not linked to a consistent notion of how political and economic power can be permanently limited. Examples from the history of populism are used to show why populists do not consistently rely on competition as a response to cronyism and why a competitive order is an appropriate means of countering the rise of populist movements.
