Abstract:
The article discusses the normative foundations of economics. This is rarely discussed in the literature, for example in Michael Sandel's discussion of the moral limits of markets or in research examining the crowding-out effects of markets on moral behavior. The contribution discusses the advantages and disadvantages of normative restraint in economics. The example of individual behavior in times of climate change illustrates that economics must not ignore the ethical dimension of human behavior. This is particularly the case when the regulatory framework sets false incentives, which leads to market failure.
