Abstract: Especially as a result of digitization and external control of science, the market for scholarly journals has been subject to change for a number of years. On the one hand new providers of these journals enter the market and on the other hand the established market participants adapt their business models. In this article, we discuss the emergence of so-called predatory journals from an economic point of view and, from a perspective of Ordnungsökonomik, we investigate the extent to which the new conditions pose dangers for the scientific community which should be countered by governmental market interventions. We argue that there is no need for a governmental intervention to secure scholars who weigh up to publish in these journals. A possible dissemination of false information to the economy or to the society is not a science-specific problem. Rather, what could be appropriate is a corresponding sensitization of the relevant players.
