Abstract: On March 13, 2020, the Federal Council of Germany agreed upon a bill for a more accurate design of competition in the statutory health insurance market. Katja Greer and Achim Wambach discuss the planned elements of the “Fair health insurance competition law”. They consider in how far the planned actions contribute to a better level of competition in the health insurance market. It becomes clear that the modifications aimed at could indeed improve competition. However, further reforms are necessary to obtain a comprehensive basis for an effective competition in the German statutory health insurance market.
