Abstract:
Achim Wambach and John Weche provide an overview of the state of research regarding a cross-sectoral decrease of competition as well as possible causes and effects. The evolution of business concentration and price mark-ups in Germany and Europe appears to differ significantly from the United States. While both indicators have increased significantly in the US, the development in Germany and Europe is far more moderate. However, there are currently too few studies available to derive robust stylized facts on the cross-sectoral development of competition. Not only from the perspective of competition policy, however, the research findings to date should be reason for vigilance: A decline in the intensity of competition across markets would also call into question the basis of the prevailing economic order.
