Abstract: As a lesson from the recent financial crisis, banking supervision initiated numerous novel transparency requirements for banks. The majority of market participants welcomes those requirements in general; however, there are growing concerns about their usefulness and efficiency. From the macroeconomic perspective of banking regulation, the question arises in particular as to the beneficial effect of transparency on financial market stability. Is this instrument possibly overestimated? Carina Mössinger points out the main conditions for transparency in the banking sector, systematizes various current requirements and discusses ex ante and ex post effects for single banks as well as for the entire financial system. In summary, although transparency does certainly not promise a “novel miracle cure of banking regulation”, it can contribute significantly to a sustainable and stable financial system.
