Abstract:
One of the many controversies in the debate on sustainable, rural regional development through tourism is the question of how a well-targeted development of the tourism sector can provide a stimulus for the creation of regional value chains and economic diversification of rural-peripheral areas – especially in the context of the export-diversification strategies currently pursued in many emerging economies. Against this background, the present paper intends to investigate conditions for knowledge-creation and -use in the form of new-product-developments at the level of regional tourism (proto-)clusters in selected (export-oriented) emerging economies. On this basis, approaches for concrete models and tools (especially socio-technical solutions) for a systemic increase in the upgrading/innovative-capacity of rural-peripheral tourism regions shall be discussed.
