Abstract:
In recent years more and more tourist information signs have been erected on German motorways. According to the guideline for tourist signage (RtB), these should serve to provide information about important tourist destinations and have an indicative function. Whether they are actually perceived by drivers and whether drivers can remember these signs and the sights, cities and landscapes depicted on them has not yet been scientifically investigated. For this reason, the present study presents the results of 29 semi-structures interviews and 25 recognition tests, so that for the first time it is possible to provide clues to the questions posed previously. In addition to the content results, the memory test itself will also be tested for its applicability in tourism and transport research. Important results are as follows: Almost all participants did perceive the tourist information boards. In addition, a free recall and supported memory can be observed among the majority of subjects. Thus the participants can distinguish between seen before and new signs, so that the ability to discriminate is given. This, however, varies between participants. Some cannot or hardly remember the signs and others can remember them much better and say of themselves that they have a “photographic memory”.
