Abstract: In addition to backpacking, the classic form of alternative tourism, a new travel trend has developed in the field of individual tourism in the last decade, the so-called vantourism. More and more people are choosing to travel in their „home on four wheels“ for a limited or extended period of time. In contrast to camping tourists, vantourists refrain from classic campsites and predetermined travel routes. Due to the lack of empirical research on this topic, we conducted an online survey to analyze the differences between vantourism and classical camping. The results indicate that vantourists differ in terms of their mode of travel, their travel motivation, vacation needs, and lifestyle characteristics. Furthermore, the empirical evaluation of a comprehensive explanatory approach showed that, in addition to age, marital status and comfort orientation, needs for self-actualization, authenticity and connection to nature are the most relevant factors explaining the decision for vantourism.
