Abstract:
Using the example of destination development in German tourism, this paper aims to analyze strategic approaches to destination development in the context of the ongoing Covid-19-pandemic. The crisis has shown that a long-term strategy development is necessary for achieving goals of tourism competitiveness and that traditional business models need to be reconsidered. Based on the findings of a student excursion as well as a congress event, a qualitative interview study was conducted and it was found that the economic impact on destinations is far-reaching and that fundamental changes in destination development need to be discussed for a post-corona era. Especially the involvement and participation of the local population by means of dialogue management gains relevance in the context of the crisis and represents an important strategic instrument. However, the central challenge remains to integrate the local population into the processes in such a way that tourism awareness is sustainably promoted.
