Abstract:
Museums are often key attractions within the product range of destinations. The increasing competition for funds forces museums to continuously reinvent their service offer. Due to this, the intensified work with special exhibitions experiences a consistent boom. Wherefore, the number of visitors generated through special exhibitions plays a key role in the performance evaluation of museums regarding essential funding decisions. During the covid-19-pandemic, many museums remained closed for months, which suspended visitor numbers as dominating assessment criteria. This study analyses perspectives considering the performance measurement of museums in the context of the covid-19-pandemic. Therefore, this article extends the prominent performance-measurement-model for museums of Barrio-Tellado and Herrero-Prieto (2019) and discusses the crisis resilience of visitor numbers and special exhibitions as formative parts in the evaluation of museums.
