Abstract: Tourists’ and locals’ encounters and residents’ support of tourism have increasingly become the focus of tourism research and destination management. Empirical studies show that a lack of tourism support is a punctual problem and that tourism intensity can have an influence on the reaction of locals. However, there are no studies on the intensity and concentration of overnight stays at the municipality level in Germany. In this study, we therefore consider for the first time the officially recorded overnight accommodation offers and additionally the offers in the booking systems of Airbnb and Fewo-direkt with the aim of having a detailed overview of the importance of tourism at the community level in Germany. Results show on the one hand that 81 % of the municipalities in Germany offer tourism accommodations. 98 % of the inhabitants live in these municipalities – Tourism is therefore everyone’s concern! Furthermore, results also show that private rentals lead to a higher spatial concentration than official statistics do.
