Abstract:
Amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing awareness of the social and ecological impacts of travel, the consequences of tourism for local populations are being critically discussed more frequently. However, traditional success indicators such as visitor arrivals or overnight stays do not adequately capture unintended (and potentially negative) effects of tourism. Therefore, this paper presents tourism-induced life satisfaction of the local population using Fuzzy Logic as an alternative success indicator. A representative survey in the Bavarian Allgäu region assessed the perceived effects of tourism on eleven different aspects of life for the local population. Using Fuzzy Logic, a satisfaction score is calculated for each aspect of life, reflecting both the importance of the aspect to the respondents and the influence of tourism on it. The scores are presented in a heatmap, differentiated by socioeconomic characteristics, and can serve as a monitoring and planning basis for tourism policy decision-makers, particularly in identifying target group-specific ‘pain points’ and developing proactive measures.
