Abstract:
New information and communication technologies have far reaching effects on tourism. This concerns both the economic organization and cultural basis of tourism. The academic research in tourism from the past years has primarily taken into consideration the general impacts on the tourism industry. In contrast however, the effects on the cultural foundation of tourism have largely been neglected. The paper presents both of these research perspectives, with special emphasis on the theoretical and practical relevance of a distinct cultural studies‘ research approach.
