Abstract:
The Rolwaling Eco-Tourism Development Project in Nepals Gauri Shankar region was set up to promote sustainable and community-based tourism that is appropriate to the needs of the local population, visitors and the fragile natural environment. The international NGO EcoHimal supported the building of the physical infrastructure and provided funding, technical and logistical know-how, training and overall coordination. The project′s focus was on providing basic social infrastructure and community capacity building to improve the living conditions of the local population as a precondition for tourism development, and the project thus combined eco-tourism development with integrated rural development. The article reflects this development approach in the Himalayan region and gives an assessment of the achievements based on theoretical considerations.
