Abstract:
The article examines how in and through communication the tourist gaze is spatialized. Compared to other aspects of the tourist gaze its communicative spazialization has hardly been paid attention to so far. The exemplary focus of this paper is on urban tourism, i.e. a specific form of modern tourism built on culture as the characteristic scheme of touristic comparison and observation. Using notions and concepts derived from sociological systems theory the functions of spatial differentiations in urban tourism are analyzed. It can be argued that spatial differentiations serve as central mechanisms of the regulation and adjustment of touristic communications, perceptions and the bodies of tourists. On this conceptual basis the practice of placing which is inherent in the (urban) tourist gaze is comprehensible. The placing of objects, people, customs, landscapes or sights is typical for the tourist gaze. As a social construction it plays a decisive part in the formation of structures and expectations in modern (urban) tourism.
