Abstract:
The voluntary compensation of aircraft emissions is one possibility to mitigate the effects of air travel. Realistic calculation of emissions is a prerequisite to assess the quality of suppliers of voluntary compensation schemes. This study assesses the results of 387 calculations for 31 flight city pairs on short, medium and long haul distances. 11 airlines, 8 retailers and 4 online booking engines were included in the setup. The study investigates data on availability and results of carbon offsetting calculators. As a result, the study shows that there are considerable differences between offsetters in the online market, which lead to a substantial lack of transparency for the end user.
