Im Ferienparadies. Spirituell motivierte Urlaubsreisen verstehen

Küblböck Stefan

Zeitschrift für Tourismuswissenschaft, 2013, vol. 5, issue 2, 179-198

Abstract: Discourses show different pictures of the relationship between tourism and spirituality. The realms can be described as both opposed and symbiotic. In spiritual travels, such as pilgrim tourism, researchers document that new hybrid forms can emerge from the two spheres. In the present case study the author focuses such hybridizations. He examines the motivations and experiences of tourists joining spiritual programmes in the sun-and-beach destination Corfu. Research findings indicated that on the one hand there are still divisions between the realms. On the other hand tourism and spirituality are merging into new forms, with the experiences of chanting, dancing and meditation forming basis and core of the hybrids. The personal reflections of participants reveal that they experience feelings of unity. “Typical” holiday settings of the sea, beach and olive groves help to deepen these experiences.
