Abstract: Multi-Perspective Destination analysis: GPS-based tourist typology using the example of city tourism in Berlin. This paper will show that the hierarchy of cities can successfully be measured not only by the number of overnight stays but also by using the “barometer method”. Using the example of the tourist destination Berlin, mobility patterns recorded by GPS-tracking are differentiated by various tourist practices and explained simultaneously by the use of city guide books. Methodologically, this is done through a combination of GPS and questionnaire data and is based on the ideas of the theoreticians Giddens and Bourdieu. The results of principal component analysis show that Bourdieu‘s ideas can be successfully applied to the phenomenon of tourism in general, and that the paradox between individual tourism and mass tourism in the sense of Giddens can explain the spatial impact of tourists. The conclusion is: strategies at the individual level lead at the macro level to a mass tourism phenomena.
