Abstract: The Cayos Cochinos Marine Protected Area (MNMCC), a group of small islands in the Caribbean Sea of Honduras, has been the background-scenery for the filming of twelve Reality Shows by European and Colombian television companies between 2006 and 2014. The Honduran Coral Reef Fund (HCRF) has authorised the shooting for its potential to create jobs in the local Garifuna communities and to market the destination touristically. However, the distribution of revenues has been unbalanced and not transparent, primarily favouring the HCRF itself as opposed to the Garifuna community. To guarantee its operational functioning, the HCRF has been increasingly forced to sell rights of access to natural resources to third parties and particularly to the TV production companies. This selective application of the regulations established for the MNMCC is the expression of an ambivalent policy that has been altering the already conflictive relations with the local Garifuna-communities.
