Abstract: Cabayugan situated in the rural part of Puerto Princesa City on Palawan Island is a well-known ecotourism- destination in the Philippines. This area has experienced a rapid growth in tourism in recent years, particularly due to the heightened awareness of the Puerto Princesa Underground River as the main tourist attraction. At the same time Cabayugan shows a high incidence of poverty, which unlocks a potential for pro-poor tourism. Tourism affects the livelihood strategies of many inhabitants and creates new work opportunities and sources of income. Furthermore, those affected are also faced with changes in the access of infrastructure and with environmental and social changes. Although tourism contributes to the alleviation of poverty for parts of the local population, derived benefits are unequally distributed and disparities persist or even increase.
