Abstract:
The Rwandan economy is characterized by subsistence. Community-Based Tourism (CBT) offers the rural population a chance to generate additional income. To implement projects successfully, the participation of the rural population is important. An insight of the traditional lifestyles and the active participation is an interesting and intensive experience for tourists. The present study examined, if CBT contributes to poverty reduction in Rwanda, to be an example for other countries. In that context, numerous CBT-Projects - all supported by tourism agencies - were investigated. The analysis of the projects shows clearly: CBT offers the local population opportunities for alternative sources of income. On an individual level, income is generated by job creation, at the local level the quality of life increases by investments in the fields of health and education.
