Abstract: Cooperations between organizations are frequently analyzed within a dichotomous market-hierarchy model. However, those models do not allow for an evaluation of potentially unequal distributions of the gains from exchange between the participating autonomous firms. Models of symbiotic firm networks may help to overcome this restriction. They constitute an alternative framework which can uncover hidden efficiency reserves and additional gains from cooperation.
