Abstract: The current financial crisis was triggered by several determinants. However, one of the most remarkable facts is that not all banks were involved in the spread of the crisis. The business model of cooperative banks constitutes a sustainable and successful counter pole to seemingly innovative modern banking strategies. The lessons from the financial crisis will be important for the banking industry as a whole.
