Abstract:
In the course of the financial crisis, German cooperative banks proved to be particularly crisis-resistant and stability-promoting. This can be attributed to a rather simple and transparent business model, sufficient equity capital, deposit protection, the regional principle and a restricted fungibility of shares. On the other hand, the high productivity of German credit cooperatives convincingly shows, that the anglo-saxon critique regarding an alleged efficiency deficit is entirely unjustified. On the contrary, the German cooperative model may indeed serve as an international reference.
