Abstract:
Third-party funding is a scarce resource for science. As science policy increasingly concentrates on programme research and excellence initiatives, there will be intensified competition for these resources in the future. On the other hand, science foundations tend to operate more as programme promoters than as grant makers. Against this background the specific situation of the cooperative science as well as future challenges are discussed.
