Abstract:
This paper gives an overwiew of the historical roots and long-term developments of the US Credit Union sector. We show, that there are close ties with European models of credit unions but also sharp distinctions. Despite their strict contraints regarding relations with non-members, US Credit Unions grew steadily during the past decades. They constitute an important element of competition in the banking sector. Further growth, however, seems to come up against limiting factors.
