Abstract: After a short introduction of the author, the key terms of the topic „co-operative society“ and „development“ are explained, before discussing major mistakes committed in development assistance in general and promotion of co-operative societies in particular. This is followed by a survey of positive approaches to support the development of co-operatives. The author discusses inherent contradictions in such programmes. It is concluded that only co-operative organisations growing from below and from within have a chance to succeed and that promotion of co-operatives should focus on creating a favourable environment and concentrate on strengthening the membership base.
