Abstract: The International Year of Cooperatives should serve as a means of revitalizing the principles of cooperatives as well as to implement those principles in a competitive environment. German cooperative banks can use the cooperative principles to clearly define their own values and propagate those values as identifying features. The corresponding development of behavioural patterns is an ongoing process of confidence building which benefits customers as well as cooperative banks.
