Abstract: The planned introduction of the Basel III regulatory framework further spurs the harmonization of the banking sector regulation in order to promote comparability and transparency on an international level. Nevertheless, the implementation of Basel III on the national level should take account of country-specific characteristics, like the German Three-pillars-system. The paper therefore discusses the consequences of the planned regulatory reform, in particular with regard to equity capital of German cooperative banks. An analysis of annual financial statements of these institutions is performed.
