Abstract: Freedom of press is essential for the functioning of a democratic society, but freedomand independence largely depend on the legal form and organisational structure of the publishing firm. The paper shows theoretically, to what extent a cooperative firm corresponds to the principle of democracy and thus may contribute to the practical realisation of this principle. Empirically, we analyse the statutes of two cooperative newspapers (the “taz” and the “junge Welt”) in order to test our hypotheses.
