Abstract:
German cooperative banks have proven a stabilising factor during the financial crisis and the subsequent euro debt crisis. They still experience a renaissance, as the member promotion principle and cooperative values reflect the zeitgeist. Since there is little need to reduce risky assets due to the above mentioned crises, cooperative banks could continually expand their business activity and significantly strengthen surpluses, equity, and liquidity.Customer loyality has grown. There was no shortage in loans as cooperative banks and savings banks increased their lending to private households and small and medium sized firms.
