Abstract: In order to guarantee the compliance with laws and regulations, two approaches are theoretically feasible. A first strategy could rely on supervision, control, and a set of sanctions. Alternatively, the ethical principles and standards of an individual may be conducive to self dependent, moral behaviour. Both approaches need to be balanced in reality. The paper critically discusses these concepts and their components.
