Abstract: Rising standards regarding compliance requirements for credit unions pose a challenge to German cooperative banks. This paper discusses principles of good covemance, and highlights the international background as well as the national regulatory code (as valid at the time of the editorial deadline, February 2014). Moreover, our paper contains refe­rences to surmount organisational barriers when implementing an efficient compliance function in small-sized banks.
